Illegal Immigration

The state and country we live in stand out in history because people from many different countries and backgrounds have found a new identity that embraces us all. We come to share a civic life and a range of values, prominent among them being respect for the dignity of each person and the potential he or she has to pursue his dreams.

Well-reasoned immigration law that is enforced is crucial not only to controlling our borders but also to safeguarding new immigrants’ rights and chances to succeed.

why change?

  • The presence of thousands of unauthorized workers in RI depresses the wages of workers who are here legally and takes jobs from authorized workers
  • The presence of thousands of undocumented people increases the cost of uncompensated care at hospitals and of maintaining prisons
  • A system that encourages the presence of illegal immigrants keeps many thousands of people living at the margins of society and open to exploitation

what needs to be done?

  • Ensure that only authorized workers are hired.
  • Quicken the deportation of criminal aliens.
  • Insist on the enforcement of immigration law.
  • Press for comprehensive immigration law reform.
